The word
necropolis (plural: necropoli)
refers to a large cemetery or burial
place (from Greek nekropolis
"city of the dead"). Apart from the
occasional application of the word to
modern cemeteries outside large towns,
the term is chiefly used for burial
grounds, often in the form of an
abandoned city or town, near the sites
of the centers of ancient civilizations.
Using this as our starting point, we chose the names for our guild ranks in a similar fashion using mostly latin rather than greek as our basis. We've taken a few small liberties with the latin, however the general feel of the names remains.
